THE DANGERS OF PUPPY MILLS
Did you know that puppy mills could harm dogs? Puppy mills also known as dog farms are a place were dogs live in overcrowded & unsanitary conditions
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). Puppy mills are used for breeding dogs. The cages from the puppy mills are very small, with wire floors, & stacked from floor to ceiling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill) . In a 2005 investigation, it conducted that in pet shops & puppy mills from California, 44% of the locations visited had sick & neglected dogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). The dogs did not have adequate food or water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). If you ever adopted a dog from a puppy mill it would take a year or more for the dog to relax and allow a human touch. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). This all means that puppy mills are not proper places for dogs to be in.
Puppy mills are located from coast to coast. Most of puppy mills are located in Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). In most states, puppy mills are legal. Only 26 states in the U.S have laws to stop animal cruelty. 500,000 puppies are born in puppy mills every year all around the world (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/keyword/puppy-mills). Out of all of them, 99% of them are sick (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/keyword/puppy-mills) . If there is 35,00 pet stores in America, imagine how many there is all around the world. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). Puppy mills have existed since the 1960s (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/keyword/puppy-mills). Puppy mills are all around the world.
In an article it says, “Dogs are kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws & legs.”(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill) . This shows that the dogs are not well treated. They also don’t have vet care, food, water, or socialization
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). Often times, the water and food provided for the dogs is either contaminated or crawling with bugs. (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/keyword/puppy-mills) . Their cages don’t have protection for the different kinds of weather. Puppy mill owners don’t want to spend money for the vet to come and check the dogs once in a while . They say it’s cheaper for an animal to die than provide medical care (http://www.peta.org/issues/companion-animal-issues/companion-animals-factsheets/puppy-mills-dogs-abused-pet-trade/). Under these conditions, the puppies are infected with viruses and parasites just as their mothers were. It is generally believed that many dogs spent their entire lives within these cages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill).
Female dogs are bred twice a year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). They are usually killed and abandoned when they are no longer able to produce puppies. Mothers and their babies often suffer from malnutrition, exposure, & a lack of adequate veterinary care (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). Puppies are torn away from their mothers and sold to dealers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). These dealers take the puppies to pet shops, so there they can sell them. The way from the puppy mills to a pet store can take a long ride, so many puppies die along the way (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). They are at least 5 weeks or 6 weeks old when they get taken away from their mothers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill). People who buy puppies at the pet shop only think about how cute they look, but if they only knew how much the puppy suffered. It is stated by a Highland Park woman that mothers are “bred to death.” (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/keyword/puppy-mills).
Did I answer your question? Yes, puppy mills can hurt dogs. 4-5 dogs die in shelters every year, maybe even 11,000 every year all around the world. They die because of sickness from its mother. They don’t have vet care for the dogs. They rather have them die then give them vet care. Their cages are not proper for them. The rules for a dog cage is that the dogs have to be able to do a full turn, it has to be 4 inches above its head, and that it can not be in the cage for a long amount of time. Puppy mills can harm a lot of dogs from all around the world.
